DANIELLE HATCH
Inspired by the phenomenon of ‘mom blogs’, this new installation explores themes of motherhood, home and connectivity via the representation of domestic spaces in the digital realm.
Danielle Hatch is a Saranac member artist.

TOM O’DAY
From 1988 – 2008, Tom O’Day destroyed art, mostly his own. This exhibit, entitled “@57,” is another transition away from what came to be known as “Art Disposals.” In 2008 he released “Actions – Disposals –Transitions – Transformations” a 115-page book that tracked his work since 1988. His current exhibition at Saranac Art Projects “@ 57” is an installation that addresses “self” utilizing video, mixed media photographic drawings, discards, remnants and art remains. Tom O’Day is an instructor at Spokane Falls Community College and is a guest artist curated by Jenny Hyde.

Jen Erickson is a contemporary artist who lives and works in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. Her nationally displayed drawings pull inspiration from obsolete technology and information systems. Erickson graduated with her BFA from The University of Montana and her MFA from Central Washington University. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Saranac Art Projects and is active with PUNCH, an artist run gallery in Seattle, Washington.

Lisa Nappa is a professor of art at Eastern Washington University where she has taught ceramics for the past 16 years. Her recent work focuses on the beauty and underlying politics of water. She is currently working in a variety of media including ceramic sculpture, photo collage and mixed media sculpture. She exhibits her work nationally.

Diversions will be up at the Saranac Art Projects at 25 W. Main, Spokane WA from November 4 through November 26, 2011. An opening reception will be held in conjunction with the First Friday Artwalk November 4 from 5:00 to 8:00pm.

Carrie Scozzaro
The archetypal goddess triptych is reimagined as a foursome, represented in this series through four generations of changing cultural values. They also reflect Carrie’s interest in gender and social politics and the intuitive process of assemblage—responding to materials, objects, textures and colors to create something that conveys more than the sum of its parts.

Kurt Madison
This work is a series of new mixed-media sculpture and installation.

Opening reception will be Friday September 2nd, 2011.

Mardis Nenno
This work is an exploration of location and terrain through the medium
of unfired clay and glaze materials.  By using clays and minerals in their
raw state I’m making a physical and visual link to their original source.
I’m interested in ideas of mapping and grids and the imposition of line on
the natural world. I’m using my neighborhood along the Spokane River as a
reference point for much of this work.  Light and dirt, fence and pathways
along the water define my physical world.  The large wire/clay sculpture
will be allowed to weather outside over the winter.  In spring the entire
structure will be fired above 1800F.

Chris Tyllia
This work is an exploration of digital processes and ceramic materials.
It consists of small pieces, kernels of ideas, fragments, fur, glass, rocks,
industrial slag… a collection of oddities.  It’s a collection of simulation
to simulacra, just lovely bits and pieces of materials, moods, thoughts,
words and perhaps a story or two.  Come see some small, shiny, bright
objects and some images too.

SORT; A Tribute to the American Worker: A performance art project by Bernadette Vielbig.

Saranac Art Projects Gallery August 1st through 27th

The artist will work in the B gallery on a regular work schedule for the month of August. Her tasks of cataloguing previously used parts from her installations will be pre-determined and documented as they are completed.

This piece is manifest from the artist’s experiences working in auto & food industry manufacturing for a brief period in the Midwest and a lifetime of studio practice task work.

Come and see the work(er) as the space will change consistently throughout the month of August.

Items used in the work will be available for purchase each signed the last three days of the exhibition, August 25th/26th/27thth.

Items will be priced according to hourly scale wages.

Schedule:

Monday Aug 1st – Items arrive in gallery and SORT #1 begins, subsequent SORTs as completed. Check the south wall for details daily.
Wednesday 3rd, 10th, 17th; 24th, the artist will SORT 12 – 4PM
Thursday 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, the artist will SORT 11 – 2 PM
Friday 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th, the artist will SORT 2 – 6 PM
Saturday 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th, the artist will sort 10 – 4 PM

Please refrain from distracting the worker from her tasks when in the gallery.

Nearly Naked: An exhibition of ceramic arts by Matt Boland will show at the Saranac Art Projects gallery from August 4 through 27th.

Matt Boland strives to expose the deepest of human emotions, the secrets, the shameful moments, the disguises we all conspire to hide behind. A nearly life-long resident of Spokane with a recent Masters degree from The University of Georgia, Matt Boland strives, through the manipulation of ceramic materials, to show his inner most workings, fears, regrets, and hopes.

Matt’s work will detail the human as alien, the benign as monster.

State of the Visual Arts in Spokane: Creating Patronage

Saranac Art Projects is pleased to host the final panel discussion in our ongoing series examining the current state of affairs in the Spokane art scene. To recap:

The first State of the Visual Arts Symposium created an open forum for discussing things happening in our community theorizing what the future might hold. Then we addressed “Venues” – spaces dedicated to creating and exhibiting art in our region. We then hosted a conversation about “Critical Dialogue” – authentic, engaged, objective discussions about the quality and relevance of the work created and exhibited in our city.

Our fourth and final symposium will concentrate on creating a more expansive and engaged audience for the visual arts.

Our featured panelists will comment about what they are currently doing to “Create Patronage” as well as what more could be done. The meeting will have ample time reserved for discussion and audience participation will be encouraged.
